Gateway To The World

My final project for Drawing II, end of second semester freshman year. Done in watercolor with some black conte (to make the interior tight). This was so much fun despite the fact that I dislike drawing geometric, precise structures!

Art Update

Mon Nov 30, 2009, 4:58 PM
So I definitely do NOT want this semester to end <3 My Drawing class has been going so well that I just want to keep on working! This thanksgiving break all I did was art, art, art! I was able to make 4 new pieces. One was my Drawing final (took me a a long time, too) and the other three are part of a new series I'm working on. I'm really excited about this series, too :) I've been playing around with this pattern in one form or another since I began drawing anime back in middle school. It wasn't until a few weeks ago that I was able to refine it and see it in a sophisticated way that I was able to use it effectively. So the series is about this design that I've incorporated into womens' hair and how it illustrates partriarchal societies' focus on women and how the longer the hair the more beautiful the woman. Long hair has become so synonymous with beauty that it scares me. I see girls on America's Next Top Model have complete break downs and watch their self-confidence shatter as Tyra cuts their hair into a pixie instead of flowing waves. That kind of attachment to long hair and being a beautiful, confident woman is truly terrifying. It's been instilled in us that without hair to our shoulders we are no longer women. Isn't that crazy to think about?!

I've also come to terms with my painting class, haha. I really hated the first 2 1/2 months of that class because all we did was paint still lives with palette knives. Now we've moved onto the figure and portraits which I find MUCH more interesting. I love the human body <3 It is so gorgeous. It's like a landscape but so much more contained. I can see light and colors much more on human skin than on terrain :P It's a little annoying for when I actually do try to draw and paint landscapes but I don't really do them all that often so it doesn't bother me THAT much :)

I've also moved some of my musical tastes :D I've been much more into low-key folk/country and acoustic stuff. Neko Case is one of my favorite Folk/Country artists and I've recently latched onto Jose Gonzalez in the low-key, dark acoustic. He has this haunting sound to his voice and guitar that just works with me so well :) I'm also into Phoenix, they're just AMAZING. I've got to head to work right now so I'm cutting this short but I figured you all were WAY past due an art update :) Photographs coming soon!

Taken with my gorgeous Canon 30D. I am currently a Bachelor of Fine Arts major, in my second year at Plattsburgh State with a concentration in drawing. I'm loving life and trying to put that vibrancy into my artwork :)

I like your deviant ID. I'm a kickboxing instructor myself,I've also trained in Mauy Thai and MMA. I'm looking to do college soon, I don't seem to find anything that intrested in.
Is a degree in fine arts under BA (bachelor of arts)? I'm looking for something similar but can't find anything in this country.
I don't know why I shared that but I just felt like.

There is the BA (bachelor of arts) and then the BFA (bachelor of fine arts). The BFA is more credit intensive and is suggested as a major whereas the BA is suggested for those who want to major in something else but would like a minor in the visual arts. Many State university of New York schools have BFA/BA programs (Fredonia, Oswego, Oneonta, Plattsburgh, New Paltz and more) and many specialized private school have BFA/BA. Good luck finding something :) Make sure to look at faculty and student work to see if the school is doing what you want! A good foundation is key and it's also a good idea to take art history courses, you need to know what history is so you can learn from it!
